Our Services

A dental hygienist is a licensed dental professional who specialized in promoting oral health and preventing periodontal disease. Dental hygienists perform many roles in a dental office, including:

Dental hygienists use different tools to complete individual patient assessments; they use hand instruments and ultrasonic devices to remove tartar, plaque and stains. Removal of tartar provides a smooth tooth, which facilitates teeth cleaning at home and promotes gingival healing. Dental hygienists devote their undivided attention to these tasks, as they are trained specifically for it. Dental hygienists strive for excellence in this area because they know that healthy gums are the foundation for healthy teeth and influence over health.

During a dental cleaning you will receive diagnostic and preventative services from your dentist as well as any needed educational information.

Diagnostic services include:

  1. Reviewing and updating medical history, including information about heart problems, pregnancy, diabetes and medications which may have an impact on your oral health.
  2. Oral cancer examination and screening.
  3. Evaluation of gum tissue.
  4. Checking biting, chewing and swallowing patterns.
  5. X-rays or examination of teeth to detect decay
  6. Referral to specialists for specific problems.

Preventative services include:

  1. The removal of plaque and tartar.
  2. Stain removal.
  3. Fluoride application.
  4. Sealants (for children)
  5. Polishing teeth, including fillings and crowns.
  6. Cleaning and adjustment of dentures and partial dentures.

Educational services include:

  1. Brushing and flossing instructions.
  2. Nutritional counseling.
  3. Recommendations for future treatment, such as when to return for follow-up hygiene treatment, periodontal (gum) concerns or restorative options.
  4. Evaluation of self-care effectiveness
  5. Tobacco-cessation counseling.
